Summer has finally reached the UK, and with temperatures soaring up past 30° this week we thought we'd run you through some easy ways to ensure that your ATV is kept running smoothly in the coming months of hot weather. With constant and rigorous usage during the summer, there are numerous problems that can arise whilst using your ATV in the heat:
The cooling system is often an overlooked part of the machine. Acting as an important tool during the season, if you fail to clean or service your cooling system, you may find that it will fail on you when you need it the most.
Radiators can often become clogged with dirt and debris from muddy tracks & dirt roads or even small weeds and buds from fields and grasslands. This dirt could quickly become collected in the fins of the radiator and can cause issues that may contribute to the failure of vital engine components, as the radiator is the biggest cooling component for the engine. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, make time after each ride to check your radiator is free from debris.
Coolant fluid is often forgotten as it is usually hidden from sight. Replacement of coolant should only be performed by a trained service mechanic, however, it is beneficial to know the condition of your coolant. To check you coolant fluid, look into the radiator cap when the engine is cold and purchase a coolant tester. Unless you ride your ATV in constant mud or carry large loads every day, it’s likely that you won’t need to replace coolant however it is important to continually check your coolant levels when you fuel up.
Other tips for riding your ATV this summer:
Use sun cream
Take plenty of water with you & keep hydrated
A light coloured helmet will help keep your head cool
Hot weather gear will keep the sun off your skin and provide optimal ventilation to keep your body cool
Stop riding if you experience any symptoms of sun or heat stroke
Take a break!
